Cost guide

How much does a metal building cost in Houston?

Most Houston-area steel buildings run roughly $15–$32 per square foot for the kit alone, $22–$46 erected, and $38–$85 turnkey on a new slab (sample 2026 ranges). Size, eave height, doors, insulation, foundation and site work drive the total, and bigger buildings cost less per square foot.

What’s the difference between kit, erected and turnkey?

  • Kit only

The engineered steel package delivered to your site: frames, purlins, girts, panels, trim, fasteners, usually doors. You arrange the slab, erection and everything else.

  • Erected

The kit plus our crew and equipment to erect it on your finished slab. Ideal if you already have a slab or a concrete contractor. See steel erection.

  • Turnkey

Erected, plus site prep, the engineered slab, standard doors, insulation, permits and coordination, with one contract and one point of contact. See turnkey design-build.

Cost drivers

What drives the cost of a metal building?

Size (footprint)
Steel weight follows square footage, but larger buildings spread fixed costs, such as endwalls, engineering and delivery, over more space, so price per square foot drops as size goes up.
Eave height
Taller walls add column length and wall panels. 12 ft suits a garage; 14–16 ft fits lifts, campers and tall doors.
Roof pitch
The standard 1:12 is the most economical. Steeper 3:12 or 4:12 roofs look more residential and cost more steel and panel.
Wind & roof loads
Every building is engineered for the code wind speed at your site. Houston has minimal snow, but closer to the coast wind design gets stronger and framing gets heavier.
Doors & windows
Roll-up doors, especially large, insulated or wind-rated ones, are big line items, and every opening needs framing.
Insulation
Condensation control matters in Houston humidity. Blanket insulation is the baseline, and spray foam costs more but suits conditioned space.
Foundation
An engineered slab with thickened perimeter beams and anchor bolts. Soil, pad height and under-slab plumbing change the cost.
Site prep
Clearing, fill and a compacted building pad, plus driveway access and culverts on rural lots.
Permits & engineering
Permit fees and foundation design vary by city and county, and floodplain sites can add requirements.
Finish-out
Electrical, plumbing, HVAC, offices, mezzanines and barndo interiors are priced on top of the shell.

How do I get an accurate price?

  1. Decide what the building is for and measure the largest thing that will go through the door.
  2. Check deed restrictions and which city or county permits your lot.
  3. Get a site visit. Access, drainage and pad height change the price more than most people expect.
  4. Compare complete scopes line by line, not headline kit prices.

FAQ

Cost questions

How much does a metal building cost in Houston?

It depends on size, height, doors, insulation, foundation and site work, and on whether you buy a kit, kit + erection, or turnkey. Our metal building cost guide explains each cost driver and shows sample price-per-square-foot ranges.

What is the difference between kit, erected and turnkey pricing?

A kit price covers the steel package delivered to your site. Erected pricing adds the labor and equipment to put it up. Turnkey adds the foundation, site work, doors, insulation, permits and coordination of trades. Compare them in the cost guide.

Why do online kit prices look so low?

Online prices are usually for a basic kit with minimal doors and no foundation, delivery, erection, insulation or permits, and sometimes not engineered for Houston wind loads. Compare complete scopes, not headline prices.
